Hi Everyone

Hope all is well and you are enjoying your summer, I know from listening to the radio and tv, lots of you are experiencing some extreme weather conditions. We have had a couple of weeks of rainy and windy weather, but it has straightened around with clear skies and some light smoke either from Alaska or the Northwest Territories.

As a result of all the rain that we have had, and the forest fire from 2 years ago, there is an abundance of wildflowers and an incredible display of fire weed turning the hillsides a brilliant pink.

Lots of the trout are still in the shallow waters and the cisco are still in large schools close to the shoreline making for some great flyfishing and spin casting. We have been having large hatches of damsel flies and may flies with the cadis flies just starting to show up. The bigger lake trout are starting to move out into the deeper 40-to-70-foot range and are being caught on spoons and tube jigs. Both trolling with tube jigs and when locating groups on the bottom, jigging, have been effective.

Lots of big pike have been caught still in the shallow water using bright colored spoons and flyfishing with large floating flies on fast retrieve. Bass poppers also work great with sometimes 2 or 3 fish coming at the same time. If you are catching lots of little ones, move on as there are no big ones around as they like to eat the little guys.

A little bit more wildlife has been spotted this year with moose and bears. Some of the eagles have started to rebuild their nests in dead trees where their nests were lost 2 years ago from the fire. The chicks are almost ready to start flying. More ducks are around with their little ones; they must be starting to recover from the bird flu. There has been a green wing teal hanging around which is unusual for us to see here.

We have been busy building a floating dock as the old dock was becoming too labor intensive with having to pound in more posts and trying to keep it level after the frost pushing up the posts and the ice pulling some out every year. It will be great when it is all finished.

Holy, how much further do we have to go

We have gone past the longest day of the year but still have almost 24 hours of daylight and some beautiful sunsets. In another month we will be able to see the stars again and hopefully the northern lights will show up as this year is supposed to be great with one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

What a great way to end a day’s fishing.
